🎒 Schools & kids
Moving to Austria with kids? Childcare, schools, German support and 2026 family benefits like Familienbeihilfe, explained step by step.
Schools, childcare and family benefits in Austria
The key facts for families moving to Austria with children. Updated November 2026. Most family benefits stay at their 2025 level in 2026 and 2027.
Krippe and Kindergarten: childcare before school
Childcare in Austria is run by the federal states and towns. Rules on fees and opening hours differ a lot between states. Vienna has one of the most generous systems.
Krippe (nursery)
The Krippe or Kleinkindergruppe takes children up to about age 3. Places for babies and toddlers are the hardest to get, so register early.
Kindergarten
The Kindergarten is for children from about age 3 until they start school at 6. Many run full-day groups with lunch.
Compulsory last year
The year before school is compulsory and free. It starts on 1 September after your child turns 5. Your child must attend at least 20 hours a week.
Vienna: free childcare from 0 to 6
In Vienna, care in city kindergartens (Städtische Kindergärten) is free for children with their main residence (Hauptwohnsitz) in Vienna. Many private kindergartens join the free model too and get city funding for it.
You still pay for meals. From January 2026 the meal fee in city kindergartens is €94 per month. Families with a low income can apply for a reduction or exemption.
Children without a main residence in Vienna pay fees. So register your address first. See our guide to registering your address.
Vienna: how and when to register
- Register online: use the kindergarten portal on wien.gv.at/kindergarten.
- Main period: 1 November to 31 December for a place starting the following September.
- Timing: the day you register inside this window does not change your chances, says the city.
- Allocation: the city looks at criteria such as working parents and siblings in the same kindergarten.
- Answer: families who need a place for September hear from February, often by the end of March.
- Private kindergartens: you need a customer number (Kundennummer) from the city. Ask each private provider about its own deadlines.
Other states: Fees, free hours and registration dates differ by state and often by town. Ask your Gemeinde (municipality) about places and deadlines. A second compulsory kindergarten year is planned by the federal government but was not law when we checked.
How the Austrian school system works
School is compulsory for 9 years. It starts on 1 September after your child’s 6th birthday. Public schools are free. Families decide on the next school type when the child is about 10.
| Stage | Age | School | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary | 6–10 | Volksschule (primary school) | Grades 1–4, usually at a school near your home |
| Lower secondary | 10–14 | Mittelschule or AHS lower level | Grades 5–8. The Mittelschule is the general middle school. The AHS (Gymnasium) is the academic track. |
| 9th year | 14–15 | Polytechnische Schule, AHS, BMS or BHS | The last compulsory year. The Polytechnische Schule prepares for an apprenticeship. |
| Upper secondary | 14–18 | AHS upper level | 4 years, ends with the Matura (school-leaving exam) |
| Vocational | 14–19 | BHS (higher vocational school) | 5 years, for example HTL (technology) or HAK (business). Ends with Matura and a vocational diploma. |
| Vocational | 14–17 | BMS (intermediate vocational school) | 1–4 years, vocational diploma without Matura |
| Apprenticeship | 15+ | Lehre plus Berufsschule | 3–4 years of paid training in a company plus part-time school |
Training obligation until 18
After the 9 years of school, young people who live in Austria must stay in education or training until 18. This is the Ausbildungspflicht (training obligation). School, an apprenticeship or approved courses all count. The obligation ends earlier if your child finishes a further qualification. Ignoring it can lead to an administrative fine.
The Matura
The Matura (Reifeprüfung) is the school-leaving exam at AHS and BHS. It gives access to university. Written exams are central and the same across Austria. In 2027 the central Matura starts on 5 May with German.
Without a Matura, the Berufsreifeprüfung or the Studienberechtigungsprüfung can also open the way to university.

How to enrol your child in school
School is compulsory for every child aged 6 to 15 who lives in Austria. This also applies if you arrive in the middle of the school year.
Starting first grade in Vienna
- Vienna runs the school enrolment (Schuleinschreibung) in November, about 10 months before school starts.
- For 2026/27 the window was 10 to 21 November 2025. Watch for the 2027/28 dates from the Bildungsdirektion Wien (Vienna Board of Education).
- You register at one public Volksschule and can name a second choice. Distance and siblings at the school count.
- Bring the Meldezettel (registration form) and your child’s birth certificate. Report any disability or chronic illness.
- In early February you get a letter with the assigned school. A second meeting checks school readiness and German.
- Children who turn 6 between 2 September and 1 March can start early if they are ready.
Arriving mid-year
- Register your address: get your Meldezettel first. Schools and the city need it.
- Contact the Bildungsdirektion Wien: its information centres help children who arrive during the school year or whose first language is not German.
- Bring documents: passport, birth certificate, last school reports, ideally translated.
- Placement: the board assigns a school with a free place, usually near your home.
- German test: if your child’s German is weak, the school tests it with MIKA-D (see below).
German support at school: Deutschförderklassen and MIKA-D
Children who do not speak enough German get extra lessons. The system changed for the 2026/27 school year and gives schools more freedom.
MIKA-D test
MIKA-D is the official German test for pupils. From 2026/27 the new MIKA-D 2.0 has one compulsory test per school year, at the end of the summer semester. Schools can test more often if needed.
Deutschförderklasse
A separate German support class with 15 or 20 lessons a week. Children with „intensiver Deutschförderbedarf“ (intensive need) usually start here.
Deutschförderkurs
A German course with 6 lessons a week, next to the regular class. It is for children with „Deutschförderbedarf“ (some need).
New from 2026/27
Schools can now choose their own German support model instead of separate classes, if the school authority approves their concept. Ask your school which model it uses.
- Children with weak German can be „außerordentliche Schüler“ (non-regular pupils). They attend class but are not fully graded at first.
- From 2026/27, pupils in a Deutschförderklasse can get grades in the subjects they attend.
- Kindergarten also supports German. Children who need German support cannot be exempted from the compulsory kindergarten year.
International and bilingual schools in Vienna
Vienna has many international schools that teach in English. They are private and expensive. Public bilingual options also exist.
| School | Curriculum | Annual tuition 2026/27 | One-time fees |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vienna International School (VIS) | IB, English | €9,253 (early years half day) to €29,160 (grades 11–12) | Application €670, admissions €5,760, capital fee €5,040 |
| American International School Vienna (AIS) | American and IB, English | €15,892 (Pre-K) to €29,065 (grades 11–12) | Application €700, enrolment €3,300, capital fee €7,000 (grades 1–12) |
Fees from the schools‘ own 2026/27 fee lists. Other international schools in Vienna set their own fees. Ask each school for its current list.
Public bilingual schools
Vienna Bilingual Schooling (VBS) is a public programme in some Volksschulen, Mittelschulen and AHS. Children learn in German and English. Public schools charge no tuition. Places are limited, so ask early.
Before you choose
- Many employers of expats pay part of the fees. Ask before you sign your contract.
- International schools often have waiting lists, especially for primary grades.
- Even at an international school, learn German as a family. It helps your child with friends and later jobs.
University in Austria: tuition fees for EU and non-EU students
Public universities in Austria are cheap for EU citizens. Students from outside the EU pay more, but still far less than in many other countries.
| Student | Tuition per semester | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| EU, EEA, Swiss citizens | €0 within standard duration | Free for the standard study time plus 2 extra semesters, then €363.36 |
| Non-EU citizens | €726.72 | Some groups pay like EU citizens, for example holders of certain permanent residence permits |
| Students from listed developing countries | €0 | Exempt automatically |
| Everyone | ÖH fee €26.20 | Students‘ union fee for 2026/27, always due |
Figures for public universities, from the University of Innsbruck fee page. Fachhochschulen (universities of applied sciences) and private universities set their own fees. You need the Matura or an equal foreign certificate to study.
Family benefits in Austria: what you get in 2026
Austria pays family benefits that do not depend on your income or job. In 2026 and 2027 the amounts stay at the 2025 level. They are not raised for inflation.
Familienbeihilfe (family allowance)
| Child’s age | Per month |
|---|---|
| From birth | €138.40 |
| From 3 | €148.00 |
| From 10 | €171.80 |
| From 19 | €200.40 |
Plus a sibling supplement per child: €8.60 with 2 children, €21.10 with 3, €32.10 with 4, €38.90 with 5, €43.40 with 6 and €63.10 with 7 or more. For a child with a severe disability you get €189.20 more per month.
Paid with it
- Kinderabsetzbetrag (child tax credit): €70.90 per child per month. It comes automatically with the Familienbeihilfe.
- Schulstartgeld (school start money): €121.40 per child aged 6 to 15, paid in August with the Familienbeihilfe. No extra application.
- Payment is monthly and reaches your account by the 8th of the month.
- You get Familienbeihilfe until 18, and until 24 if your child is in training or studies. A few cases extend to 25.
- You apply at the Finanzamt Österreich (tax office). You can claim back up to 5 years.
Familienbonus Plus
A tax credit of up to €2,000.16 per child per year (€166.68 a month) until the child turns 18. After that €700.08 a year while you get Familienbeihilfe. Claim it through your employer with form E30 or in your tax return with form L1k.
Kindermehrbetrag
If you earn too little to use the full Familienbonus Plus, you can get the Kindermehrbetrag in your tax return. No separate application is needed.
Familienzeitbonus
Fathers or second parents who take Familienzeit (unpaid family time off work) right after the birth get €54.87 per day.
Kinderbetreuungsgeld (childcare allowance)
You choose one of two models when you apply. You usually cannot switch later, so compare both first.
| Model | How long | How much | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kinderbetreuungsgeld-Konto (flat-rate account) | 365 to 851 days for one parent, 456 to 1,063 days if both parents take turns | €41.14 per day for the shortest option, down to €17.65 per day for the longest | Parents who did not work before the birth, or want a long time at home |
| Einkommensabhängiges KBG (income-related) | 365 days for one parent, up to 426 days if both take turns | 80% of your last income, max €80.12 per day | Parents who worked in Austria for at least 182 days before the birth |
- Part of the time is reserved for the second parent. In the flat-rate account that is 20%. In the income-related model it is 61 days.
- If both parents split the time roughly equally, each gets a €500 partnership bonus.
- For the full amount, the mother needs 5 check-ups in pregnancy and the child the first 5 check-ups under the Eltern-Kind-Pass (parent-child pass).
- You can earn a little on the side: up to 60% of your last income or at least €18,000 a year in the flat-rate model, and €8,600 a year in the income-related model.
Karenz (parental leave)
As an employee you have a legal right to unpaid parental leave. Your employer cannot refuse it, but you must keep the notice deadlines.
- Karenz lasts until the child’s 2nd birthday if both parents share it. One parent alone can take it until the end of the 22nd month.
- The minimum is 2 months. Both parents cannot be on leave at the same time.
- Mothers tell their employer by the end of the maternity protection period (Mutterschutz). Fathers tell their employer within 8 weeks after the birth.
- You are protected from dismissal during Karenz.
- Karenz and Kinderbetreuungsgeld are separate. Their lengths do not have to match.
- Elternteilzeit (parental part-time) is possible until the child’s 8th birthday in firms with more than 20 staff, after 3 years in the job.
Who can get family benefits?
- Everyone: you must live in Austria legally and permanently, or have your centre of life here. Your child must live in your household.
- EU, EEA and Swiss families: you get the same benefits as Austrians. If one parent works in another EU country, EU rules decide which country pays first. Austria may pay the difference.
- Non-EU families: you and your child each need a valid residence title under section 8 or 9 of the Settlement and Residence Act (NAG). See our guide to residence permits.
- Refugees: people with asylum get benefits. Since 12 June 2026 people with subsidiary protection get them if they do not receive basic care (Grundversorgung).
- Kinderbetreuungsgeld also needs Familienbeihilfe for the child. Non-EU parents must meet extra residence rules.
